S01 E03: Kadapat
Kadapat has a strange tendency to pit contradictory forces against one another;
not just tradition and modernity, digital and analog, but also cultural traditions that were never meant to intersect.
One half of the group plays the jegog — a gamelan-like instrument from the Jembrana region of Bali, a place long associated with outcasts, bandits, and the marginalized. The other half of the group plays the gender — a gamelan often associated with the nobility of Karangasem, where the best genders are said to be lathered in gold. In Bali, an island of rigid customs, allowing these two instruments to meet is a notable decision. That they add glitchy electronic sounds to the mix only makes the concoction even more dramatic.
